Tips for folding your fitted sheets

Silk, a natural protein fiber, is luxurious and smooth. Some people think it is difficult to care for silk because it is delicate. In general, with proper care, ilk can keep its beautiful for a long time.

Silk is expensive, thus you should choose the suitable color that go with your overall room decoration when buying silk fitted sheets.

Learning how to fold a fitted sheet is like riding a bicycle: Both tasks can seem overly complicated at first, but once you’ve done them smoothly, they become second nature. If you’ve got riding a bike down pat but still a little help with folding a fitted sheet, FREEDOMSILK is here to provide those figurative training wheels for a little longer.

Follow These Steps

  1. Drape the Fitted Sheet Over Your Hands
With the top two corners inside out and the elastic edge facing you, hold the fitted sheet with one hand in each of the top corners.
  2. Fold the Fitted Sheet in Half and Tuck in the Corners
Fold the fitted sheet in half vertically, flipping the right corner over the left to create a pocket. Turn the bed sheet 180 degrees and create a second pocket up top. (If your folded sheet has gathered sides, tuck them into each other.)
  3. Fold the Fitted Sheet in Half Again
Readjust your hold so there are two corners over your left hand and the other two over your right, with the folded seam at the bottom and the tucked and gathered edge facing you. Fold the sheet in half once more so that all four fitted corners meet, and flip the right set of corners over the left set.
  4. Lay the Folded Sheet on the Bed
With the gathered edges facing up, fold the longer part of the curved edge in toward the center a few inches to create a straight edge. The sheet should now be a rectangle. Fold in half lengthwise, then fold into thirds.

Health benefit for women about silk

More and more young ladies realize the magic health benefits of pure silk as it is hypoallergenic, organic, soft.Charming ladies have already indulged in these indelible smooth feelings.

  • Improve sleeping problems

According to the National Center for Sleep Disorders Research at the National Institutes of Health, 30 to 40 percent of Americans have problems sleeping. And experts say that bedding may be at least partly to blame in some of these cases. Sheets that irritate your skin, bunch up, or invite dust mites in will interfere with a good night’s rest.

silk pajamas and silk comforter can improve sleep, enhance body vitality, and slow down aging.

Silk is free of any potentially irritating added chemicals and contains natural substances that ward off various environmental allergens (and resulting skin conditions), including dust mites, mold, and fungus.

  • Anti—aging

Silk is anti-acarid, antibacterial and antiallergic to help skin stay clear and free of irritation. “One particular study showed improvements in patients with the skin condition eczema who used silk, but not in those who used cotton.

Additionally, because it is composed of long, smooth, natural fibers tightly woven together, silk helps decrease skin’s loss of moisture and is better tolerated than other fabrics by people with sensitive skin, Peterson says. Stay away from synthetic fibers, wools, and even some cottons that may contain small, stiff, woven fibers that can cause irritation.

  • Solve hair problems

Want that glossy shine and youthful bounce back to your hair? Besides promoting skin health, sleeping on a silk pillowcase can do wonders for your hair.  Other materials actually wick away the oils and moisture in your hair, and makes friction by snagging on rough fibers that can break hair. In fact, wrapping hair in silk before sleep or rubbing dry hair after washing is a method women have used for centuries.

Silk is great for all hair types and particularly beneficial to those with curly, dry, frizzy, thinning, delicate, or chemically treated hair.  Damaged or stressed hair also requires some TLC prior to sleep if you want to increase hair strength and shine, and decrease dryness or breakage.

About momme weight

Silk bedding quality is referred to using momme weight.

Many people are familiar with thread count, which is used with many fabrics as a way to distinguish the overall quality of the fabric.

However, with silk, thread count is not generally used because it is not a good means to distinguish between different qualities of silk.

Silk is an incredibly fine thread to begin with, and thread counts would be extremely high, regardless of the quality of the silk. So for example, a low-quality silk may have a similarly high thread count to a high-quality silk. For this reason, silk uses an alternative system to measure quality, called momme weight.

What is momme?

In simplest terms, momme weight describes the weight of 100 yards of silk, 45 inches wide, in pounds. So, if a fabric is listed with a momme weight of 8mm, it means that 100 yards of the fabric weighs 8 pounds.  Many silk dresses and other silk clothing items will be around 8mm in weight. Higher quality silks tend to be 14, 15 or 16mm or higher. The best Silk bedding is 19mm or 19 pounds in weight per 100 yards.

range of momme weight

Silk generally falls into a range of 6 momme on the lower side to a maximum weight of 30 momme. For bedding, silk with a 19 momme weight is generally considered to provide the best balance of strength, aesthetics and affordability.

Importance of momme weight

If you are looking at various silk bedding options and you are unable to find a listed momme weight, you should look elsewhere. Without a declaration of momme weight, you have no way of knowing the quality of silk.

Effect of momme weight

While a higher momme weight silk will be more opaque than a lower momme weight silk, silk in general is a semi-transparent fabric. When deciding on color, remember that dyed silk will be more opaque as the dye will stop light from passing through the fabric, while white silk will be less opaque. However, many people enjoy white silk for its classic look and ability to match with many different types of bedding.

Tips for housewives’choice of silk beddings

Silk bedding is has it all! An incredibly luxurious feel, is naturally hypoallergenic and is modestly priced. What more could you ask for? If the idea of slipping into bed between silk sheets or draping your bed with a cloud like silk comforter isn’t enough, then justify it to yourself by knowing that silk is healthy as it allows the body to breathe and wick away moisture as you sleep. Moreover, many people find that silk does not irritate their skin. You are now forewarned; once you are sleeping on silk there is no turning back! Choose from silk sheets, silk pillowcases, silk comforters and even silk pillows.

Making sure that this duvet is pure silk is very important if you want to stay cool all summer long. Take a look at our very own  silk duvet for more information.

The ideal summer duvet is usually between 2-4 tog and has no additional fabrics added to it.

Choosing a color combination that works for you and your decor is very important. Not only will the colors you choose enhance your mood but they can also help you fall asleep easier.

In fact, the cheapest silk sheets are usually no more than 15 per cent silk. Unless sheets are labelled as 100 per cent silk, they are likely to be a blend of polyester, cotton, or another smooth, silky material. Usually people with a lower budget choose the lower blends of silk, which are easier to care for as well compared with 100 per cent silk sheets.

Another difference between silk sheets types is the momme weight. Momme weight is similar to thread count in other fabrics, but because this method is not a good measure of quality for silk sheets, momme is used instead. Momme describes the weight of silk per 100 metres, usually measured in pounds. Silk sheets range between 6 and 30 mommes with the highest being pure silk which is actually quite transparent. Standard silk sheets usually range between 15 and 22 mommes because pure silk sheets are more fragile than those with blends of other materials.

Most experts agree that 18-20 momme is a good balance between quality and durability in silk sheets.

Advantages in life of silk

Besides its luxurious softness and lustrous beauty, there are benefits of silk that other fabrics, whether natural or man-made, simply cannot match. These advantages of silk have rightly earned silk its reputation as the queen of fabrics. If “Why Silk?” is still a question in your mind, the following benefits of silk should remove any doubts.

  • You may suffer from the Allergy and Asthma for a long time, with so much treatment, however, no effect. Anything can do? Definitely yes. Just silkbedding for you .

Because of its natural protein structure, silk is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics

  • Silk is warm and cozy in winter and comfortably cool when temperatures rise. Its natural temperature-regulating properties give silk this paradoxical ability to cool and warm simultaneously. Silk garments thus outperform other fabrics in both summer and winter. Silk worn as a second layer warms without being bulky.

All-climate fabric

Silk is highly absorbent and dries quickly.

  • It can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling damp. Silk will absorb perspiration while letting your skin breathe.
  • In spite of its delicate appearance, silk is relatively robust and its smooth surface resists soil and odors well.
  • Silk takes color well, washes easily, and is easy to work with in spinning, weaving, knitting, and sewing .
  • Mixes well with other animal and vegetable fibers.
  • Silk is a natural heat regulator, able to maintain the air around you at a comfortable temperature when you sleep. The smooth surface of silk pajamas or beeding sets means there is little friction between your skin and your bedding linen, which is said to be the biggest cause for sleep wrinkles. The fact that your hair moves around freely as well basically means you will not wake up with a bedful of broken hair and your head looking like a mess.

What is Momme in silk fabric & What is thread count

What is Momme in silk fabric ?

Mommes (mm), is a unit traditionally used to measure the quality of silk fabrics. One momme = 4.340 grams per square meter; 8 mommes is approximately 1 ounce per square yard or 35 grams per square meter.
The usual range of momme weight for different weaves of silk are:

Gauze—3 to 5 mm
Organza—4 to 6 mm
Habotai—12 to 16 mm
Chiffon—6 to 8 mm (can be made in double thickness, i.e. 12 to 16 mm)
Crepe de Chine—12 to 16 mm
Raw silk—35 to 40 mm (heavier silks appear more ‘wooly’)
Charmeuse—12 to 30 mm

The higher momme weight the better?

Yes and no. It depends. Normally, the higher the momme weight, the more durable the weave, the more luxurious the fabric is, the more suitable it is for heavy-duty use, and the longer the shelf-life. Generally, all silks can be washed and the heavier ones can be washed repeatedly. The heavier the silk, the more opaque it becomes. This can vary even between the same kind of silk. For example, lightweight Charmeuse is translucent when used in clothing, but 30-momme charmeuse is opaque. Therefore, it does not mean that you must always buy silk products with higher momme weight. For instance, it would be too heavy to put on 25mm silk sleepwear for the night, but 19mm silk sleepwear is not that durable, though. In a word, it is a question of making proper choices according to your own needs.

What is the best momme weight of silk bedding ?

For bedding, the higher the weight in momme, the better the silk bedding is. Sheets between 19-25 momme are considered ideal. silk with momme weight lower than 19 are not suitable for the production of quality silk bedding linen. Beware of sellers trying to trick you into buying inferior quality sheets without declaring the momme weight. Always ask for this measurement before you buy.

Here at Lilysilk, we offer 3 different momme weight classes. Starting from the entry-level 19 momme, Lilysilk also offers intermediate 22 momme and luxury 25 momme weight classes for your choosing.

What is thread count?

Thread count or threads per inch (TPI) is a measure of the coarseness or fineness of certain fabrics, most notably cotton. While it is not the definitive measurement of the quality of silk fabrics, it is good for reference when you purchase silk online. It is measured by counting the number of threads contained in one square inch of fabric or one square centimeter, including both the length (warp) and width (weft) threads. The thread count is the number of threads counted along two sides (up and across) of the square inch, added together.

What are the thread counts of Freedomsilk’s bedding sets ?

Thread-count is not as important in silk products as it is for cotton, as in silk threads can vary greatly in terms of diameter and length. However, it is still something that should be noted when purchasing silk. For silk products with same momme weight, the one with higher thread count is usually considered to be better. Normally, the 19mm silk has a thread count of 300-350, Freedomsilk’s 19mm silk usually has a minimum thread-count of 400 which is already what some would refer to as “luxury”, our 22mm has a thread-count of 600 and our 25mm silk an even higher 750 which is why we insist that our products is truly the best on the market.

How to care for your silk bedding & clothes

Although we recommend that our pure silk product be dry cleaned, cleaning and washing silk at home is surprisingly easy if certain precautions are observed.

I.Silk Sheets and Clothing

This category includes silk pillowcases, fitted sheet, flat sheet, bed-skirt, duvet cover, sleepwear, lingerie, sleep cap and shirt.

Hand Wash At 30℃
Use lukewarm water: 30C/86F is the ideal temperature for silk to be hand-washed
No Heat
Heat ruins the fabric structure of silk
Mild Cleaning Agents
Use Special Detergent for Silk. We recommend TENESTAR as the brand of specialized silk cleaner agent for our products. Woolite and other mild detergents can also be used but not recommended.
Do Not Use Bleaches
Avoid detergents with enzymes, bleaches, and brighteners at all cost.
Rinse with a few drops of vinegar
A few drops of distilled vinegar can help dissolve the chemical traces (e.g. sweat/soap residue) on the silk.
Rinse quickly and don’t over soak.
Do Not Tumble Dry
Never tumble dry silk. Hang dry if possible, however, avoid direct sunlight exposure.
Cold Iron As Needed
Irons should be set on the lowest possible heat setting, and if the iron has a particular silk setting, that is even better. Moving the iron back and forth can stretch and pull the silk out of shape. The iron should never rest on any spot for too long, in case of burning silk fabric structure.

For those without the time, patience or just physically unable to hand-wash silk, our products can withstand machine washing as well. Of course, there is more risk involved, and certain precautions must be taken to minimize them.
Machine wash in lukewarm water (30°C) on most gentle cycle available.
Most washing machines should have a “delicate” setting. Some machines even have a silk setting specifically for cleaning silk.
Minimize spin time
Spinning can be very dangerous for silk fabric as the forces involved can shear weaker silk fibers.
Use protective casing
To best avoid shearing and tearing of silk fibers, it is recommended that you use some cloth casing that could let water through and yet keeps the silk fabric in one piece.

Machine-wash tends to be the most practical way to clean silk as it is fast and requires little attention, but in fact, you should be even more careful than when you hand-wash, as there are many ways the machine can tear your silk to pieces if you do not treat the wash cautiously.

II.Silk Basics

For washable duvets or pillows, we recommend machine washing. And you can follow the rules above. To keep them warm, please don’t do the washing too often. Just air in well-circulated areas 2~3 times every month (avoid direct sunlight exposure).

For those basics that couldn’t be washed, always protect them with a removable and washable cover. You can also do spot-clean with lukewarm water and hang dry after spot-cleaned. If in need of thorough cleaning, please use professional dry clean only.

Tip: For daily maintenance, simply turn your comforter over towards the end of the bed instead of after you get up and let the fresh air or the sunshine in (if your bed is near a window) for 10-20 minutes. This helps freshen your comforter considerably.

III.Silk Blanket

We recommend professional dry cleaning for silk blanket as silk blanket needs to avoid direct touch with water. And please store it in a cool, dry place.

Correct care will help your silk products will last for years without losing their quality. Learning how to wash silk in the washing machine or by hand is simple-just observe these considerations and you will enjoy your silk products for a very long time.
